Watching My Father Die

Death can wither the living, slowly. Leading the way across a dark canyon as it blights. Deterioration spreads, gaunt and apparent. Face and limbs shrivel with receding life. The tide has turned. We watch it ebb. The recognition is stark against soft memories. The view of this dark cavern startles w...

Yesterday

Yesterday won't come again.
Yesterday is gone.
Good or bad,
The day was had
And moseyed right along.

Yesterday's remembered.
Tomorrow's but a dream.
Today we can
Make better than
And polish to a gleam.

Coffee

A new day opens,
A cuppa joe.
The smell caresses.
Delicate sips
By sleepy lips.
Suddenly bold!

Intoxicating,
This humble bean.
Delightful steam,
Erase the sleep,
Breathe deep.
Hmmm...coffee!

They scurried 'cross his vagrant tongue. They shimmied up a tooth. Then toppled out before a thought, Appalling and uncouth. His face bloomed red. His ears flamed hot. His throat began to cough. To bad there hadn't been a switch, He would have turned it off. Their noses wrinkled as with a smell His ...

Not A Bird

I thought it was a bird that chirped Throughout the live-long day. I heard him in the morning, noon And evening chirp away. He chirped on Sunday...Monday, bright. He chirped on Tuesday too. He chirped on Wednesday. Then I heard Him chirp on Thursday too. Who was this noisy little bird That chirped o...

So Quiet, This Place

Pellets of snow hiss. They whisper against brown leaves Gathered at the feet of icy monuments. As eddies swirl about branches And sift through freeze-dried weeds Like invisible, listless fingers. So Quiet, this place. So peaceful...in a hollow, wretched sort of way. So Quiet as old man winter roams ...

This is so beautiful, Stella. I love it. I plan on writing another Huitain using this rhyming pattern. I do like it better. I chose the other, because no one in the poetic exploration group on AP had chosen to use it yet. I just have to be different. :-)

My Little Bird (Huitain)

I set the little birdie free
To fly across the rolling sky
As from my heart I said, good-bye.
But then in wonder, I did see
The little bird return to me,
Perch on my hand and chirp away
A song composed for me, for me
That he still sings today, today.

The Ballet (a Haibun)

Gathered in a slanted column of light, the tiny insects dance. They wear the light they dance in like borrowed costumes. They glow brighter than fireflies. Points of light climbing and dropping in sync. Swirling in the cool eddies of the coming evening. A shining ballet inching its way across the ga...

The House Next Door

A cricket trills In the lonely garden Where closed and curtained Windows sleep. It's song faintly quavers Through the quiet house And settles like dust In shadowed corners. As evening darkens, Nothing stirs in the shrouded rooms... Now that the owner has passed. Unbelonged things wait For reassignme...

She Heard A Fly Buzz

She said she heard a fly buzz. Did the reaper hear it too? Did he pause in his approach; With what he came to do? Perhaps the fly distracted. Perhaps he let it so And watched it play upon the glass Before he bid her, go. For sure...that blue, uncertain buzz Had cast a stunning spell In those appoint...

This Ancient evening has visited Countless times across the centuries. The cool air holds the gazes of Peasants, warriors, and Kings. Their many tongues utter Silently through the dusk. Do Not Torture The Quiet Child

Be careful. Do not torture the quiet child. The one who listens and absorbs. The one whose words reside In the colorful kingdom of the mind. Do not plead, beseech, and implore. Do not shut that heavy door. Don't supplicate and turn the key... Make them shrink away. "Just say something. Anything...

We came upon a skeleton in the woods once. The pale bones startled us, Our play suddenly forgotten. The fallen pieces puddled loosely Upon a patch of bald, cracked earth. It had only been a cow, but... The silence of our wonder added to The austere serenity of those bones. We breathed their regal st...
