You'd think...

You'd think that I'd be over you,
now that our days are done;
the days of sweet surrender,
in the dying of the sun.

Gone now, is the laughter,
of times we once did share;
closed, the book of happiness,
when once we were a pair.

You'd think that I'd be over it,
now that our nights are through;
when entangled in your limbs,
I awoke each morn anew.

But nothing last forever dear,
in time, the dark does come;
but too soon it came for us,
now, all I feel is numb.

You'd think that I'd forget your smile,
but that hasn't been the case;
and you are with me still,
even if, it's but a trace.

A beautiful and flow to your words David, and such a sad , almost wistful poem; of course her smile will linger in your heart for always even it is just a trace...

I'd heard it said once in a movie or something, "you don't lose someone all at once. You lose them a piece at a time." The person was referring to the memory of that person that is now gone. Your poem made me think of that line. It is true. Although, we never completely lose them. Like your poem says, we're always left with a trace of them to carry with us.
