As Dickie Sparrow was Sleeping

As Dickie Sparrow was sleeping
his wife quietly opened the door
she packed spare feathers in a case
and wasn’t coming back anymore

Very soon she found a tree
and began to build a nest,
it was lovely without Dickie
for he was always such a pest

Jenny Wren brought some bedding
and Ruby Robin brought some food,
Jim Cuckoo was not allowed in
Mrs Sparrow said he was rude

“I want to help” said cheeky Jim
“Let me feather your nest”
“Fly away” tweeted Mrs Sparrow
“Magpie will do his best”

When Dickie found his wife had gone
he began to feel really mad
there was no one to make his breakfast
and all the chicks were sad

Jim told Dickie where she was
and that Magpie was hanging around,
so Dickie went with Jim Cuckoo
to see the new nest he had found

Magpie brought all sorts of things
for Mrs Sparrow to enjoy
there were lots of rings and silver foil,
he was quite a charming boy

Dickie and Jim saw him under the tree
and quite a fight broke out,
they pecked the tail of Magpie
when Mrs Sparrow wasn’t about

His pride hurt the charmer flew away
whilst Dickie relined the nest,
he said “I’ll go bring the chicks along
this new home is the very best”

Dickie smiled at Jim Cuckoo
and the naughty pair shook wings
Mrs Sparrow fed the chicks
and hid the sparkling rings

A lovely series, Stella. You must have a lot of fun writing these as we do reading them.
