Dickie Sparrow’s Kite

Dickie Sparrow made a kite
from feathers and twigs in his tree,
“Oh that is so pretty” said his wife
“Have you made that for me?”

“Goodness no” said Dickie
“I’ve always wanted a kite,
Cuckoo and I are going to fly it.
but it has to be just right”

Ruby brought some ribbons
and Magpie tied them to the string
Jenny Wren added a tail feather
it was really a lovely thing.

When nobody was looking
Mrs Sparrow tried to make it fly
she didn’t know it needed a breeze
and soon began to cry.

Jim Cuckoo was laughing
when the other girls came along
so Ruby pecked his naughty beak
he knew he was doing wrong.

Jenny and Ruby carried the kite
to a branch that was very high
and Mrs Sparrow held the string
whilst she tried to make it fly.

“Hold it tight” chirped Ruby
“You really mustn’t let it go”
Just then Dickie arrived
crying ”Oh my goodness no!”

Mrs Sparrow soon took flight
hanging on the ribbon and string,
then everyone started laughing
for it was such a funny thing.

Mr Owl woke up from his sleep
but thought he was still in a dream
when he saw a bird attached to a kite
flying along airwaves upstream

Soon the kite began to fall
and Mrs Sparrow slowly came down
“Now look what you’ve gone and done”
said Dickie with a disgusted frown.

All the pals thought it was fun
and helped to make another kite,
Dickie didn’t tell his wife
and kept it hidden out of sight.
