WAR ~ a Villanelle

Postby Stella » Sun Nov 06, 2016 11:41 am

Young men fight in such an horrific war
each one fully armed and ordered to kill
many lives are lost like often before

Hundreds will be waiting at Heaven’s door
so much earlier than would be God’s will
young men fight in such an horrific war

Commands given from politician’s floor,
directions that soldiers have to fulfil
many lives are lost like often before

All we ask is for peace and nothing more
committing murder was never a skill,
young men fight in such an horrific war

More bloodshed will never settle the score,
nor the blasting bombs screaming out so shrill
many lives are lost like often before

Innocents lay dead on a foreign shore
where human greed has been to take its fill
young men fight in such an horrific war
many lives are lost like often before

I so hate war and destruction but it will never stop - it's sick barbaric it's a lunacy now we have fanatics using religion as a tool - no it's just an excuse to kill because they are evil and believe they will walk into paradise - it has been the same since the beginning of time

This is a fitting tribute for those who went to war. A villanelle has only two rhymes and extra effort is required to sustain these rhymes. Also the repeats work so well and it really shows how futile war is. I will remember this poem for a very long time Stella!
