Dickie Sparrow’s Christmas (no:21 in series)

Postby Stella » Mon Dec 08, 2014 2:41 pm

Dickie said it was Christmas,
his friends flapped their wings with glee.
“We must have a celebration” said Jim
and went to find a Christmas tree.

Ruby collected some holly
with berries so bright and red,
whilst Jenny coloured some baubles
she had made from old crusts of bread.

Magpie made from shiny tin foil
for the top of the tree a star,
and Dickie told his fledglings that
they were the Wise Men come from afar.

Mrs Sparrow baked a cake
of fruit and nuts from Squirrel’s store,
he said she was stealing and he
grumpily closed his tree-house door.

So it was on Christmas Day
a special meal for all she prepared
of beetle breast and frog leg soup,
no-one complained, no-one dared!

Jenny had made some crackers
one for each of the fledglings three
for being Wise Men and dressing up.
Dickie chirped “Is there one for me?”

“Oh seeing as it is Christmas
I’ll make one for all of you”
said Jenny in her sweetest voice,
when in came Jim Cuckoo.

“Who’ll give me a kiss for Christmas
beneath my mistletoe?”
Ruby blushed as he kissed her cheek,
then Dickie told him he had to go.

“It was only for fun” said Ruby
and jealous Jenny did agree,
“Don’t send him home” said Mrs Sparrow,
“I was hoping he might kiss me”

Jim shared the mistletoe with Dickie
and Magpie joined in as well,
the friends had a wonderful party
as the first Christmas snowflakes fell

This is utterly delightful and you bring the characters to life brilliantly Stella. Your imagination knows no bounds and the menu works a treat. I adore the fun in the last stanzas and my big smiles from reading this Christmas version of Dickie Sparrow, mean that it has made my day!

The playfulness and companionship found within this group of characters you've created is quite heart warming, Stella, and lovely. Each of them has their own unique personality, and you allow them to shine. A most Merry Christmas it was for this group, and I hope your Christmas was lovely as well, Ma'am. God bless you, Stella.
