Before The Next Bombs Fall

Postby Joseph Anderson » Mon Jan 05, 2015 4:54 pm

I hear the song of driven winds,
against the barrack walls;
The sound a memory to me sends,
of angry barroom brawls.

We boys are in a great unease,
but speak of usual things;
Of women, alcoholic sprees
and what the morrow brings.

Come morn we are over Dover,
in flight to Germany
and when this war is over,
perhaps, Europe may be free.

Death and destruction lie ahead,
dropped from where eagles fly.
For all the guiltless ones, soon dead,
we cry, dear Lord, we cry.

A happy life amid the sky,
where many dangers loom;
We pray the tides of war deny,
our flight from instant doom.

A happy life amid the sky,
my God, where did I find this lie?

Written, sometime in 1944, when I was a 19 plus
member of the U S Air Forces and troubled by the
tragedies of war. How can we ever thank the people
of Britain for their resistance to Nazi aggression?

You and they were a special breed Joseph, Britain's strength was always in her being an island .. Hitler could not send huge armies to march on our soil, and we are a resilient breed who pulls together in times of crisis.
They bombed the H*** out of our country but that was all they could do to us.
I like your poem and the thoughts in it of a young man growing up very quickly during a world war.

Joseph this brings back stories my parents told me of the courage and comradeship shared with your country to bring to heel the evil fermenting in Europe then. Thank you for the clear scene you painted with your poetic pen - may we never forget the bravery shown by yourself and your comrades back then..

A magnificent write and dedication to those who put Liberty before their own lives, and shed blood, lost lives, that we may be free, sir. Having worn the uniform of my country's armed forces (and which one of my sons wears right now), too, many of your lines speak to me of my own personal experiences. God bless you.

Amazing and powerful penning and thank you for the history as to when you wrote this poem. We are lucky to have you on the site with years of experience you have in crafting poetry dear Joseph. This is brilliantly crafted as usual and really tugs at my heartstrings. Nightmute writes great war poetry too from experience, and I can see he really appreciates this write too Joseph.
