That Winter Morning

by Sandra Martyres
The stillness of a winter morn,
She felt it at the break of dawn,
Seeing the thick mist on the lawn,
Hiding buds waiting to be born.
Still sleepy, as she stifled a yawn
She saw Grandpa looking forlorn,
Gran's death left him tired and worn.

She greeted him effusively,
And he responded lovingly.
She made him breakfast hurriedly
He pecked at it reluctantly.
Although he liked to eat heartily.
She tried coaxing him worriedly
But he refused adamantly.

She made him walk in the garden,
Warning that his bones would harden.
He treated her like his warden.
When tired, he sought her pardon
And lay down - the end was sudden.
That day he joined Gran in heaven,
Shedding his last lonely burden.

I very much admire your rhyming couplets and I found the ending a real surprise and loved how Grandpa joined Gran in heaven. My dear friend Sandra, thank you for sharing with me.

This is very lovely. The fact that grandpa dies is softened by the fact that he is now with Gran.
