Land Of Milk And Subsidy

Postby stevenstirk » Sat Apr 18, 2015 8:51 am

A group of animals approached me

"Good evening Mr Sheep" said I
"How much is your wool"
He thought for a moment and replied
"It's not worth it mate. It's only twenty
seven pence for a whole sheep load. It
must be complete rubbish. I wouldn't
want to 'fleece' you"

I turned to the Hen, said I
"Good evening Mrs Hen. How much
are your eggs".
She thought for a moment and said
"One pound a dozen mate, and I'm
not 'yolking'. They must be rubbish"

I turned to the Cow. said I
"Good evening Mrs Cow. How much
is your milk"
She thought for a moment and said
"Forty pence a litre mate, and that's
'whey' too cheap. It must be rubbish"

"Why is everything so cheap" said I

"This is 'Once Great Britain'" they replied
"The Land of Milk and subsidy"

A compelling and most amusing read with the sheep, hen and cow all playing their appropriate parts. Like Seema I find it interesting too and I love how the title is repeated in the closing line to emphasize your powerful message Steven.

The Dr Doolittle of satire! Good to be back on this site and seeing your work, old friend. My new years resolution is to get back into my poetry after a very long hiatus, oh and catch up and read the poems of long time friends.
