A Proper Charlie

He stood erect and didn't bow
On this our VE day
A bead of sweat formed on his brow
And on his temples...grey

The medals pinned onto his chest
Were weighty to extreme
His honours proved he was the best
And everyone did gleam

Yet he had never been to war
And never had to fight
Had not been past his huge front door
Nor showed true guts or might

For he was royal was Charlie boy
And wore his gifts with pride
Protected by the hoi polloi
Who shed their guts and died

I hope that on our VE day
He shows a little heart
Respecting folk this day of May
Who actually took part

His glittering chest shall brighten not
Those valiant and brave
Whose lives shall never be forgot
"Oh Charlie please behave" !

Steven, you have penned the words to a question i keep asking, "What has that charlie ever done to deserve those medals?"

He has never known hardship, the angst of war and losing brothers in battle... the only soldiers he ever did battle with are in his toybox.

Stella, how lovely to find a like mind on this. Before I wrote this, I did
some research to see exactly what it is that he wears. If you do likewise,
you will be utterly amazed. He got one medal for attending a Jubilee
celebration when he was four. How awful???

You have got to be joking!

I told you he only played with tin soldiers... i really cannot ever imagine him being allowed to be king.

Having actually earned a couple of medals during times of strife while wearing my country's uniform, I am flabbergasted and can only sadly shake my head at those who would presume to paint themselves as heroes when they have done nothing heroic. Hmmm....to serve, especially during times of war and strife, is honorable, but to try and garner respect by putting on display a chest full of medals for not doing much strikes me as less than honorable, I'd say.

Charles did attend Timbertop boarding school in Australia....a bit like your public schools I believe. Perhaps some of the bastardisation he underwent was deserving of a medal.....Distinguished Crying Cross or the culinary outing award; the trattoria cross. LOL

So agree why should he wear what is not deserved - bloody stupid if your ask me. But he is as bit of a mummy's boy maybe that's whyhe married Camilla!! My dad was a prisoner of war for 4 years never talked about it - my granddad is buried in France killed 2 months before the end of WW1
So yes it gets up my nose to see him wearing all those undeserved medals just so he can wallow in some kind of glory - heaven help us.
An excellent write well done.
