Thrashed

Postby stevenstirk » Tue Jun 02, 2015 10:02 pm

He once went to grammar school
In sixties Merseyside
Where masters wore the mortar boards
And school kids ran to hide

Where Masters chose a punishment
Of any type preferred
And kids were very soundly whipped
And no one really cared

He was beaten on the arse
And backs of legs and hands
And slippered with a massive shoe
And other reprimands

Had to stand for hours long
And with his nose alone
Would press two books of Evensong
Without a single moan

Against a wall while masters looked
And there, he would remain
And if he moved or dropped a book
He'd simply get the cane

And when he went back home to mum
With welts on blackened hands
His Ma would say "You're just a bum
Deserved of reprimands"

And so he looked to modern youth
With angst and much alarm
The words he spoke proclaimed his truth
"It never did me harm"

The last stanza says it all, doesn't it? Who could take a look at the youngsters today and not think we should bring back at least a few things. Like (one of my favorites) children should be seen and not heard. Maybe that was taken to the extreme, but it wasn't entirely a bad idea in my estimation. (Noisey, whiney children - a pet peeve of mine.) :-)

Discipline not only taught proper behavior, but showed that we cared about and for the children, sir. With this type of discipline effectively being removed, the kids nowadays run rampant without any regard to the consequences that their actions and behavior incur (they are thoroughly indoctrinated into the 'I'm a victim' mentality, alas, seeking to place the blame for what they do on others). Well said, Steven, indeed.

As it was and as it should still be, me thinks. A well rhymed and well crafted poem, Steven.

Masterfully penned...there are no rules in school anymore...I think public schools ought to have some kind of dress code too. I can't believe how some of the girls dress. They look like they work in a brothel ha...It seems like the kids are in charge now.Rose
