What Have We Done

Across that backward horizon they glide
Leviathan pods near the dawn of time
See them swell and dive
Blowing mist into the air
Almost mythical
Behemoths of the deep
Hear their timeless song
Look back and see them
As they were then
The calves rising and plunging
In perpetual play
Ageless, they seem
Unceasing
Everlasting

Did the constant stars tell them that?
Did they hear "forever" in the wind and waves?

They crossed the centuries in their briny realm
And left Eden far behind
Just like the rest of us
Led astray by time
Lost now in a pelagic desert
They flounder and fade
Where are the calves?

Don't bother looking to the forward horizon
They're not there
...Are we?

What have we done?

*Inspired by information from ENENEWS:
Baby whales keep dying. Since 2011, none have survived over a year.
Killer whales dying along Pacific coast "very sick, emancipated"
Alarming changes in behavior.
Food webs are being upended
(Just to name a few).
Look it up on line. Eye-openning.

What have we Done Cindy?

Most of us just don't listen to warnings about the loss of wild creatures and habitats, and now the inevitable is happening.

Beautiful poetry my friend....and welcome
