She Heard A Fly Buzz

Postby Cindy » Sat Aug 12, 2017 9:24 pm

She said she heard a fly buzz.
Did the reaper hear it too?
Did he pause in his approach;
With what he came to do?

Perhaps the fly distracted.
Perhaps he let it so
And watched it play upon the glass
Before he bid her, go.

For sure...that blue, uncertain buzz
Had cast a stunning spell
In those appointed moments
Before the curtain fell.

She lay there first with bated breath
Then heard that simple fly,
Composed a poem before she left
Then dropped her pen to die.

This poem was inspired by this Emily Dickinson poem (untitled):

I heard a fly buzz when I died;
The stillness round my form
Was like the stillness in the air
Between the heaves of storm.

The eyes beside had wrung them dry,
And breaths were gathering sure
For that last onset, when the King
Be witnessed in his power.

I willed my keepsakes, signed away
What portion of me I
Could make assignable, - and then
There interposed a fly,

With blue, uncertain, stumbling buzz,
Between the light and me;
And then the window failed, and then
I could not see to see.
